When the Justice League and Avengers united to defeat Krona, he was sealed in a cosmic egg... an item that would eventually give birth to a new universe. It is that universe in which the friends and family of the missing Trinity have found themselves. As they accompany that universe's people on their annual pilgrimage, they learn of their people's ages-long servitude to Krona before he regained his freedom.
