Both Batman and Jim Gordon have suffered losses. Jason Todd, the second Robin was callously murdered at the hands of the Joker, who also shot Gordon's niece Barbara... paralyzing her for life. These events have led Batman to rethink the role of others in his war on crime, causing him not only to refuse the notion of taking on any other partners, but also to abandon his friend James Gordon as well.
